You can probably count on one hand how many times the State of South Carolina and the phrase “black millionaire” is used in a sentence. Clinton, S.C. native Leonard Pitts has not only reached this status but has recently used his accomplishments to build legacy for both his hometown and country.

Long before Leonard Pitts produced this vision in the small and very southern town of Clinton, the former residence was upgraded into a hospital for the primary purpose of diversity and inclusion. That particular element wouldn’t garner a whole lot of attention today but the fact that it was built in year 1916 with Federal funding under the Civil Rights Act and also built in the first state to secede from the union makes this completely astonishing.

Dr. Hays’ Hospital, a vision of Dr. Leslie St. Claire Hays, was not only considered to be state of the art and well equipped but it was also built with all races and the economically disenfranchised in mind. Although there were two segregated wards within the hospital, it was still nonetheless considered an unusually accessible healthcare facility for that day.

It was only about two years ago, that entrepreneur and philanthropist Leonard Pitts felt called to the property. With his investment, networks, along with his enlistment of local businesses he was able to bring it up to par for both veterans and citizens to live well in with a few luxurious touches to keep them up to speed.
